LPG equipment and installation questions newbie

Postby smartmart » Tue Jun 08, 2010 10:39 pm

Hi all

before i start with my question, just like to say fantastic forum ,having done lots and lots of searching across the internet information provided on this forum is very valuable indeed so keep up the good work..

right i have a couple of questions ref LPG

i have a catering trailer which has no lpg as of yet .
im looking at getting lpg installed asap i already have a griddle, bainmarie, and water boiler and fridge all lpg,
now im looking at running all the pipe work myself and then getting it checked and cert by a gas safe engineer .
1st question is what size copper pipe do i need to use ,wat have other ppl used?? ive been told 8mm pipe will do it .but just like to clarify before i start running any tubing.
2md question i have a lpg fridge which has 6mm piping attached to it ,is it just a case of getting a reducer to convert the 8mmpipe to 6mm pipe?
3rd i know all the appliances need a shut off valve ,does this valve need to be near the appliance ?? eg if i have a boiler at one end of the trailer do i need to have the shut off value next to the boiler or would it be acceptable at the other end???
i have also been told that i will also need a shut off valve were the pipes comeinto the trailer from the gas canister compartment??? is that the case if yes do i need to link everything back into this valve ,so if i shut this valve off it will isolate everything in the trailer ??
i have also been told that i mayneed a isolation valve inside the gas canister compartment (which is part of the trialer but seperate) is this the case??

can anyone recommend a place in the uk were i can order all the copper fixings from??apart from the most famous online auction site??

my next question is ref to the bainmarie i have its a dry version lpg ,when i recieved it (used) the thermocoupler is connected as it should be but its just flapping about inside the baymarie were the gas ignites?? does anyone know exactly were this coupler is supposed to sit??
the applience will light if i keep the button (gas up and down ) pressed in but as soon as i let this button out the gas just stops coming out ,now i know its a safety cut out on the thermocoupler side but my question is ,is there a way i can test the coupler?? and were abouts does the thing go ,even if i buy a new 1 i still have the problem of placing it in the bain marie,,,

sorry about the rather large question.
and thanks for any replies/advice thanks

Hi Martin and welcome to the forum.
This is outside my area of expertise but I'm sure someone can help.
There have been a few technical probs with the site recently and, of course, people are often busy. Please be patient as there is more than one member who will at least know where to point you.
Good luck.
DW

I'm fine, it's all the others!

Hi Smartmart,
Did you find the information you require? We are in a similar situation at present with no LPG installed in the Trailer. Getting a GasSafe LPG Engineer to undertake the work is getting more difficult as time progresses, and I am tempted to either have this done by my mate who is an LPG Autogas installer (and then checked and certificated by a CORGI LPG Specialist) or do it myself.

Any help would be really apreciated.

hi there just joined the forum,i am registered to work on mobile catering vans,i would strongly recomend you dont install yourself,no rep catering engineer would certify someone elses work, special attention to what type of fittings reqd, ventilation in the van is key and should be sized to work with all your doors and hatch shut.ventilation in your bottle compartment also key.ensure you employ someone with the correct module on there gas safe ticket not just lpg,com cat 1,2,3,5.its a seperate module check out gas safe website,or alternative find your local gas assesment centre in your area for help.hope this helps
